Ivy or Hedera Helix Mix: Features of keeping at home

Beginner gardeners often ask: "Can ivy be grown at home?" The people keep a lot of unkind signs about the flower. Despite the popular rumor about keeping ivy in the apartment, the most popular types of home headers are:

  • Canarian
  • Colchic
  • English;
  • heder;
  • wax (hoya).

Hoya leaves, as if covered with wax, hence the name of the species - wax

Tips florists on how to care for ivy, given in the article and will help to properly care for the plant.

Hedera - care and microclimate

Violation of the rules of cultivation will destroy the flower.

Hedera Helix - what an ivy plant looks like

In the warm period, ivy is comfortable at home at a temperature of 19-22 ° C. Heat does not suit him. With the onset of summer, the plant is taken out onto a loggia or balcony, where it is cooler.

Note. Hedera hibernates perfectly in an apartment at a temperature not lower than + 11 ° C. To drafts, the flower is viable, which is why the owners select a place for it next to the door to the loggia.

Choosing a place and the right lighting

  1. Heder needs a half-shaded place. Sometimes a flower pot is placed even in the middle of the room, away from window sills.
  2. Despite the love of shading, the development of ivy in the house requires sunlight. Variegated species require more sun so that the foliage does not lose its attractiveness along with a bright color.
  3. If the heder is grown as an ampel plant, then choose a wall that is well lit by the sun. The flower can hardly tolerate a frequent change of location, it is advisable to immediately select a permanent place for it.
How room ivy or heder propagates

Hedera ampelous

Important! From direct sunlight, the young foliage of a plant may get burned. Hedera is uncomfortable next to heating appliances.

Watering and humidity

Flower ivy indoor variegated ordinary

In the cold season, indoor ivy is watered once every 7 days, and in the warm period - twice a week. The flower is uncomfortable with insufficient humidity in the room.

The plant is often sprayed and doused in the shower

Often, under a flower pot, place a tray with water or wet expanded clay.

Fertilizers and fertilizing

In the warm season, ivy is fed twice a month with liquid fertilizers for deciduous decorative crops.

Important! When adding minerals, it is necessary to strictly follow the manufacturer's instructions so as not to spoil the decorative characteristics of the culture.

Ivy Care Precautions

When caring for a flower, it must be borne in mind that the heder is a poisonous plant.

  1. In people prone to allergies, contact with ivy leaves can cause a severe reaction.
  2. In no case should you eat any part of the plant.
  3. When choosing a place for ivy, it is necessary to take into account not only lighting, but also such a factor as inaccessibility to children and pets.

Owners of animals know how often cats eat leaves of flowers. The availability of green plants will lead to poisoning and even death of the animal.

How to care

When the ivy blooms, florists are advised to remove flowers and fruits, because the berries are poisonous and extremely dangerous.

Headers

Note. Pick off flowers and ivy berries preferably in rubber gloves. This will protect sensitive skin from poisonous juice.

Indoor ivy: diseases and pests

A prerequisite for home care for the Helix mix chedera is the treatment of diseases and protection from harmful insects.

Ivy diseases in the apartment from improper care:

  • the plant dries;
  • the leaves turn yellow, turn pale and fall;
  • ivy leaves are small and sparse.

Why do the leaves dry

There are several reasons:

  • lack of moisture in the air;
  • too hot in the room;
  • attacked a spider mite, aphid, scutellum;
  • natural process (as the flower grows, it discards old leaves);
  • lack of sunlight;
  • pot size does not fit (too small).

Why does the heder wither and dry?

How to help a flower?

  1. In ivy, the roots grow superficially, so the pot is needed not so much deep as wide.
  2. From the lack of moisture, the header is sprayed and doused in the shower.
  3. The problem of lack of light is easily solved if you put the flower pot in a more lighted place. Also, the plant is taken out of the heat in coolness.

Harmful insects start on weak ivy, which is not enough taken care of.

  1. One of the pests is a spider mite. Traces of his life are visible through white lace, entangling the leaves, which then turn yellow, dry.
  2. Gray spots on the foliage from the inside indicate the appearance of a scab. Plant growth is suspended, the leaves turn yellow, dry.
  3. From aphids, ivy withers, loses foliage.

Spider mite on the leaves of the heder

If pest control measures are not taken, the plant will die in a short time (from a spider mite in 15 days).

From pests, the heder is sprayed and watered:

  • Actellic;
  • Karbofos;
  • Actara.

The manufacturer's packaging indicates how to use the drug.

How to grow ivy from seeds

Growing a header from seeds is a troublesome task. Own seeds often do not ripen, and purchased seeds come across without varietal traits.

  1. The seed material is soaked in growth stimulants: succinic acid and potassium or sodium humate. When applying, the instructions must be followed.
  2. In succinic acid (1 tablet per liter of water) the seed is soaked for about a day; in a humate solution (the third part of a teaspoon is bred in 2 l of water) - two.
  3. Seeds are dried and sown in a bowl, the bottom of which is covered with a drainage layer: expanded clay or broken brick.
  4. The substrate is poured, several seeds are planted, observing an interval between them of at least 10 cm. The substrate is bought in a store or prepared independently from garden soil and river sand.
  5. Cover the bowl with film or glass and put in a warm place. To maintain a stable microclimate, the seedlings do not even open for irrigation, moisten the crops from the sump with water, which is installed under the pot.

Note. After a month, the first shoots should be extended. When they grow 2 real leaves, seedlings dive, transplanted into individual containers. Then they take care of the young seedlings as if they were adult ivy.

Plant propagation methods

Most often, flower growers use other methods for ivy propagation:

  • cuttings;
  • layering;
  • shoots.

The easiest option is cuttings.

Breeding

Propagating ivy with stem cuttings is easy.

  1. Cut the apical stem (not shorter than 10 cm) and plant it in nutrient soil, placing in one container no more than 3 plants.
  2. Water, cover with a film or glass.
  3. Crops are constantly sprayed with warm water.

With the advent of their own roots, ivy is transplanted into a bowl.

Propagation by cuttings

Sometimes the cut stalk is placed in a glass of water. After the roots have grown, a seedling is planted in a pot. When propagating by shoots, more than one rooted shoot is obtained. A cutaway shoot is rooted in a pot of earth. The growth of new leaves on the shoot after 20-30 days indicates that the roots have grown. The seedling is carefully taken out, divided. Each part with its leaves and roots is planted in pots.

With the help of layering, street ivy is often propagated. The method is simple. One of the lashes is bent to the ground, a longitudinal line is cut on the stem, and they are dug up with soil. When the roots appear, layers are separated from the main plant, planted separately.

Transplant and pruning

As you grow and develop, ivy needs to be transplanted. The first time the plant is transplanted a week and a half after purchase. In the pot for transplantation there should be drain holes for excess water, at the bottom - a drainage layer of expanded clay.

Note. The need for transplantation is indicated by roots sprouted through drainage holes.

It is advisable to transplant young ivy every year

<

From the age of three, the heder is transplanted once every two years. After five years - change the upper soil layer. Transplantation is carried out in the warm season (from spring to autumn). Regular ivy pruning is a prerequisite for plant care. The shoots that have thrown off the leaves are cut off, old and sick, leaving at least two buds. From them will grow young.

Trimming contributes to the growth of a lush crown, improves the decorative characteristics of the header. Despite the unkind folk rumor, many flower growers grow up a heder in the house. The decorativeness of the plant is not inferior to most home flowers, and the care of indoor ivy is minimal.
